House of the Dragon is heating up ahead of season 3.
HBO’s House of the Dragon is a prequel to the global phenomenon that is Game of Thrones, and is set nearly 200 years before the original series. It is based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood novels, as it follows the Targaryen dynasty and its decline, as well as the ongoing succession. Another Game of Thrones prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is set roughly 100 years after House of the Dragon’s events.
HBO has revealed a first-look image of Helaena Targaryen (played by Phia Saban) as she’s going through a tunnel or underground system, and fans are speculating this could signal a major change to the original novels. Fans have already begun speculating on why both Helaena and Alicent Hightower (played by Olivia Cooke) would be going through a tunnel system, and have signaled that they could be on their way to visit Dreamfyre.
Dreamfyre is a slender, pale blue dragon and is known for being one of the oldest and most beautiful dragons in the House of the Dragon era, which was previously bonded to Princess Rhaena Targaryen before later bonding with Helaena. However, this may not be the case, as the characters could also be fleeing and hiding from Aemond (played by Ewan Mitchell), who has been seen going on a mad crusade during season 2.
Helaena’s bond with Dreamfyre goes stagnant when the death of her son Jaehaerys sends her into a deep depression, and she never flies her dragon again. So, if Helaena is going to see her dragon, it would be a massive shift for the character and a big change from the books. There have already been some changes from the novels compared to the series, including making Alicent and Rhaenyra childhood friends, which would mean that the Dreamfyre visit isn’t an impossibility.
