House of the Dragon has already ruined a key storyline for season 3 pd01

When Game of Thrones was airing on HBO, it took until the final season of the show for any sort of real backlash to take hold in the fandom. In some respects, the franchise’s first spinoff, House of the Dragon, has done a speed run of that scenario. Following a second season which was cut from 10 episodes down to eight that resulted in an underwhelming season finale, as well as some baffling deviations from George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, the series has garnered a shocking amount of negativity online.

That was only exacerbated when Martin himself spoke out against the show and its many changes from his source material following season 2, sparking one of the most public feuds between the creator of an IP and its adaptation in recent memory. That feud has gone from a roaring fire to a simmering blaze, as fans latch onto each new bit of information with renewed frustration. We now know that Martin was asked to step back from House of the Dragon season 3 following a contentious meeting with showrunner Ryan Condal, where he reportedly declared that, “This is not my story any longer.” When asked about the ongoing problems in December of 2025, Martin told The Hollywood Reporter that his relationship with Condal is “abysmal.”

All this is to say, there’s a strong feeling among many parts of the fandom that House of the Dragon has something to prove this season. Even with several major events from Fire & Blood on the horizon for season 3, the series has to show it can still weave Martin’s tale into a coherent, compelling story that comes anywhere close to the quality of the book’s narrative.

While I’m of the opinion that it’s too early to cast judgment one way or another on House of the Dragon season 3, I do think there’s one plotline in particular from the book that the show has already pretty much ruined. No matter how it handles it in this next season, the choices the show made in season 2 have all but doomed it to be a pale imitation of what readers got in Fire & Blood.
