Kody Brown is reflecting on where he went wrong with son Garrison Brown after his untimely death.

As the Brown family reflected on the tragedy during the Sister Wives episode airing on Sunday, May 4, Kody noted how it was all “so sad.” He looked back on the day everything unfolded, recalling a conversation he had with his now ex-wife Janelle Brown, with whom he shared Garrison, about their next steps.

“I remember sitting there with Janelle and I was just going, ‘Hey, I really just want to take my boy home,'” he told the cameras. “And so I said, ‘Let’s take him back to Wyoming and let’s bury him next to Grandma Cheryl.’ We just totally agreed that would be the right thing.”

Garrison died on March 5, 2024, at the age of 25. At the time, Kody and Janelle shared in a joint statement, where they said Garrison “was a bright spot in the lives of all who knew him.”

“His loss will leave such a big hole in our lives that it takes our breath away,” they added. “We ask that you please respect our privacy and join us in honoring his memory.”

Unresolved Tensions and Lingering Regrets

Continuing to reflect on the loss during the TLC hit’s latest episode, Kody spoke with Robyn — who has become his only remaining wife after his marriages to Janelle, Christine and Meri ended in a 14-month period — while seated fireside about regrets he had regarding his bond with Garrison. The pair wasn’t in the best of places, as Kody had issues with his sons with Janelle over his strict COVID-19 guidelines, resulting in disagreements and communication struggles.

Kody and Garrison’s issues weren’t fully resolved before his death.

“I Thought There Would Be More Time”

“It’s just heartbreaking. Rob and I didn’t get a chance to really just make things right, just not being able to say goodbye,” Kody, 56, told Robyn, 46, while using Garrison’s first name, Robert. “I just don’t know what to do with his death because it’s like I’ve got to do something different because I could have had more time with him, and I thought there would be more time.”

“Everybody thinks they got more time,” he added.

Haunted by the “What Ifs”

Kody also told Robyn that “it just wasn’t supposed to be this way.” Additionally, as he continued to dwell on the “what ifs,” Kody said: “I’m going to what if, what if, what if to death.”

“What if I’d have called him? What if I’d have been in touch more? What if we’d have gone done more? What if, what if, what if?” he continued. “It still makes me sad. It still makes me wonder if something could have been done. It’s the what-ifs. The what could have been. I think they just helped the mourning process.”

Sister Wives airs Sunday at 10 p.m. ET on TLC.
