An upcoming remake of the comedy series Ghosts is being filmed in Perth in Australia, and the cast is being finalized.

The eight-part series, announced last year, is produced by BBC Studios Australia and will air on Network 10 and Paramount+. Filming is taking place on studios and locations across Western Australia, featuring talented actors such as Mandy McElhinney and Brent Hill, with investment from Screenwest and the Western Australian state’s film production incentive program.

Like other Ghosts adaptations, the plot centers around a couple who inherit a large, historic country mansion, with Tamala (Cleverman, Nowhere Boys) playing Kate and Rowan Witt (Totally Completely Fine, Book of Mormon) playing her partner, Sean.

After experiencing a near-death experience, Kate gains the ability to see ghosts, and these spirits often cause supernatural disturbances around the mansion.

McElhinney will play Eileen, a potato famine survivor in Ireland, mother of 13 children, and pub owner; Hill will play Gideon, a calm naval officer; Ines English will play Miranda, a high-society woman of the 1900s about to be a bride; Michelle Brasier will play Lindy, a vibrant rhythmic gymnastics instructor of the 1980s; George Zhao will play Joon, a young Chinese miner during the Gold Rush; and Jackson Tozer will play Satan, a misunderstood but kind-hearted member of a 1990s motorcycle gang.

“Ghosts Australia boasts an outstanding cast and a highly talented creative team,” said Daniel Monaghan, Senior Vice President of Content and Programming at Paramount Australia. “We are excited to bring this witty and heartwarming show to the big screen, featuring distinctly Australian ghosts.”

Bree-Anne Sykes (Critical Incident) is the producer, Christiaan Van Vuuren (Top End Bub) and Madeleine Dyer (Colin From Accounts) are the directors, with Sophia Zachariou (The Office Australia) and Sophia Mogford, Head of Screenplay and Comedy at Paramount ANZ, serving as executive producers.

The writing team is led by executive writer and producer Josh Mapleston (Surviving Summer), along with editor and screenwriter Libby Butler (Surviving Summer, Neighbours) and writers Shontell Ketchell (Gold Diggers), Philip Tarl Denson (Zero-Point) and Steph Tisdell (Fisk, Rosehaven).

The series will debut on Network 10 and Paramount+ later this year, becoming the latest installment in the BBC UK spin-off series, featuring the original cast.

The original Ghosts series, starring Charlotte Ritchie and Kiell Smith-Bynoe, was later adapted into an American version by CBS, renewed in February for a fifth and sixth season. A French version, for TF1 and Disney+, premiered last week, a month after the German remake of WDR aired. A Greek version for Star Channel is in preparation for release this fall.
