Don’t expect his character to be a cheerful fella — there’s hidden anguish there.
Riley Green will make his acting debut on Marshals this Sunday (April 19), armed with his boots, five o’clock shadow, rugged good looks and his guitar. He probably didn’t have to study too hard for this role, huh?
But while Garrett — that’s his character’s name — may be smiling in sneak peek photos, there’s deep pain behind those eyes, as his old buddy Kayce Dutton is soon to realize. The two were Navy SEALs together way back when, and Garrett is seeking out his friend for support as he battles PTSD from events they witnessed. Kayce is now a Marshal in Montana, and a new teaser for Riley’s first episode, “Blowback,” indicates Garrett is about to learn the ropes, too.
Appropriately, Garrett arrives in Montana via some sort of tour bus, and we see flashes that tease his plotline. In one scene, he and Kayce embrace in a bear hug during what appears to be a vulnerable moment. “Music’s my only escape,” Garrett explains as he gazes out onto the horizon. “It helps me forget about the past.” Jump to nightfall and he’s playing his guitar around a campfire. In another shot, he and Kayce are cheersing their drinks in a bar. It’s likely both men will have something to learn from one another as they catch up
“He’s been through a lot. He comes back into (Kayce’s) life, who’s trying to help him out,” the country star tells USA Today of his character. “It’s a tough character.” The outlet reports that Riley will appear in four episodes, so there’s plenty of time for drama and perhaps even a happy ending for Garrett.
Thank Luke Grimes (he plays Kayce Dutton) for the “Worst Way” hitmaker even scoring this role at all — Riley casually mentioned he’d like to get into acting, and Luke had a part in mind he knew Riley would be perfect for. There was just one issue …“I knew I wasn’t doing myself any favors. Who wants to stand next to him on screen? You know what I mean? He’s 6’4″ and pretty darn handsome,” the Yellowstone-star-turned-Marshals star joked in an interview with SiriusXM’s The Highway, “But I was like, ‘You know what, man? I think he’d actually be really good at it, and I think this would be a great way in for him.’”
To coincide with his Marshals debut (April 19 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS), Riley will release his new song, “My Way,” this Friday, April 17. That’s the one he’s playing around the campfire.
